About The South Delta Garden Club
WHO WE ARE
We will be celebrating 70 years in 2023, The South Delta Garden Club was established in 1952 as the Evergreen Garden Club. The name was changed in 2016 to better reflect the type of garden club we are and to accommodate online searches. Our 100 plus members are typically garden enthusiasts from Ladner, Tsawwassen and Point Roberts.
MISSION
The mission of the club is to promote the love of gardening, share knowledge and support the community in the beautification of South Delta.
WHAT WE DO
Club members attend meetings to hear expert speakers, share gardening knowledge, and socialize. Members participate in club events such as work parties and potlucks, tours to public and private locations, and volunteer for special projects and community events.
Each year a major fund-raising event is hosted and money raised is used to fund the activities of the Garden Club, as well as to continue ongoing support at the hospital gardens and other local initiatives.
A yearly plant sale has been the club’s main fund-raising event in the past, however in 2017 the club started holding a garden tour in lieu of a plant sale.
COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
The garden club has donated funds to the new Delta School District Farm Roots program, the Ladner Community Garden and the Boundary Bay Secret Garden. Funds are also donated yearly to the BC Council of Garden Clubs’ Scholarship Trust Fund.
Ongoing projects where funds and volunteer hours are spent include the Green Thumbs program at the Delta Hospital Residential Care Unit, the Healing Garden at Delta Hospital, and the Memorial Garden at Delta Secondary School.
MEETINGS
Meetings are held nine times per year on the third Tuesday of the month. No meetings are held in July, August and December. A summer potluck is typically held in July and in December there is a Christmas Party in lieu of a meeting.
